The second project, character design.

For this project we are going to use the characters that we created for our induction project and create them as a clay bust and a whole model in zbrush.

I decided that I wanted to change my model slightly before creating it in zbrush and set about creating new items that my character could have. I spent a while searching on google for reference imagery for my character. I started looking into robot eyes, as my character wears a mask they're the only feature on his face that are visible. I decided against this idea because the eye really didn't fit my character at all well considering his backstory.

Next I worked on the design for my characters mask, as it was a ninja I wanted something that was covering his whole face apart from his eyes. There were a few reference images that I have on my mood board that I used small pieces of each to create the mask that I wanted. Originally it was going to be a smooth all over mask with a knot tying it at the back. Now however I have gone for the more layered look where it appears that cloth has just been wrapped around my characters head and all the pieces tied at the back. I gave this sort of robe look to my ninja and it covered most of his bust as he wears it as a scarf aswell. This is because he lives in a desert land where it is very cold in the nights and there are a lot of sandstorms so he needs it for protection and warmth.

The rest of the clothes that my character will be wearing are those also suited to a desert environment, he will wear loose fitting robes that are light and very thin, so he doesn't overheat during the daytime. I'm also debating on whether to give my character a cape, seeing as they protect you from the cold and he would benefit from wearing one at night.

After finding all the reference imagery for my ninja I got set to work on designing him. I creating a front and back orthographic of him which shows what he will be wearing in small detail for me to use as reference when creating him as a clay model and on zbrush. The orthographics took me about an hour to complete, and I know that i'm going to find them useful when creating my character because I now know exactly what I want him to look like is down on paper.

Next I opened up zbrush and maya. I created a cube in maya and imported it into zbrush. I was told that this would be easier because then I wouldnt have to deal with pinch points at the top and the bottom of my model. I started by creating a more circular shape whilst making sure that the topology that I had was still even. After this I stretched the model and created a neck and bust that I will detail after I have started doing my face. I created the base shape for the bust and will work over the whole thing piece by piece and make sure that it all comes together at the end.
