Clay work

We are going to be making physical models of our character designs. Firstly Simon showed us a demonstration of how to use the clay. We had to mix the paler and darker materials together to make the clay that we would be using. This makes the material that we are going to be using to create the physical model for our characters.

To get the shape of the head for our model we used tin foil as the foundation. We were given a sheet of tin foil and crushed it into a small ball shape using a hammer to get it completely compact. After we had created the small ball we stuck the tin foil on to a metal stand which held it in place, this was the first step now we begin to create our model using the clay over the top of the tin foil ball.

We are only doing the head and shoulders bust of our model, and it's going to be about 5cm in height and about the same in the width. My character design doesn't show any of the actual face apart from the eyes as he is wearing a mask. So originally i didn't have to worry about the detail on it whilst i was shaping the face. I just made sure that I had the right proportions because otherwise the mask I created wouldn't fit on top of it.

I waited for my clay to dry a little before adding detail to the eyes. I used a sharp tool that we were given to take away from the eyes to create detail. I then started to build my mask, one small piece at a time. I rolled out thin, flat strips of clay and then started placing them onto my character whilst using my reference image for the placement of the strips.
